Community Immersion

The Community-Based programs drop students in authentic and profound foreign settings with the intent of helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and a very different culture.

The immersion programs offer an Orientation & Education phase as well as an Internship or Service phase to the experience.

The Orientation & Education phase provides students Language skills, insight about their new cultural environment and academic content, while the Internship or Service phase encourages them to interact with the culture in a work setting. By living in a homestay, as a member of the community, participating in experiential learning activities, and engaging with the local people as Social Actors.

CELEI Internships or community placements offer an educational opportunity of real-world experience combined with professional skill building and cultural immersion, to complement the coursework of the programs. When you have completed an internship, you will have international job experience, the professional skills training, and the confidence to meet requirements of today employers seeking to hire employees with:

  • Relevant, global experience
  • Foreign language proficiency
  • Intercultural communication skills
  • Confidence and adaptability
  • Workplace knowledge and experience

CELEI facilitates and encourages Language Exchange as part of the learning process in all its programs. Language exchange is a service that allows people who wish to learn a specific language to interact with people who speak that language. This is a win-win situation since both parties are helped.

If you’re speaking with a native speaker or someone who has spent significant time living in the culture of the language you’re learning, you will learn cultural nuances you wouldn’t have otherwise picked up.

It’s important to know that to really understand a language, you need to understand how the people that speak that language think. A language is often customized to fit their way of existence and of thinking. If you understand the people, you will understand the language

Moreover, when you do language exchange you make friends and enter their circles, making valuable personal relationships in the community

CELEI offers a service of language exchange, consisting of establishing contact between students of Spanish and English at student request.

Youth Association membership or participation is a means to pool efforts and share ideals through collective responses; a tool for youth participation with continuity and projection in society, able to channel the concerns of young men / women, their commitment and identification with common values

You can choose to join or participate in a youth association working in a field of your interest.

CELEI will guide and support you in the process.

As part of the experiential leaning approach CELEI organizes Intercultural Discussion sessions around specific topics of interest, with university students and youth associations. The sessions will be led by intercultural facilitators

Asking questions and joining in discussions are important skills for university study. Discussions can be an excellent strategy for enhancing student motivation, fostering intellectual agility, and encouraging democratic habits. They create opportunities for students to practice and sharpen a number of skills, including the ability to articulate and defend positions, consider different points of view, and enlist and evaluate evidence. When students engage in a intercultural discussion, they gain a deeper understanding of the host culture and society and improve greatly their Language skills. Some of the benefits of discussion are:

  • To understand a subject or topic area more deeply
  • To explore ideas and exchange information
  • To expand and clarify knowledge
  • To improve ability to think critically
  • To improve language skills
  • To increase confidence in speaking
  • A discussion can change students´ attitudes and ideas
  • A discussion can helps a group make a particular decision or come to a conclusion
  • A discussion gives participants the chance to hear the thoughts and ideas of other students
