#Migration in Spain and Morocco, a case for Social Justice

Program Description

This Study Abroad program is designed to make visible and to understand the ongoing migratory crisis between Africa and Europe, and the reality of hundreds of migrants that try to reach European soil.

Lecturers and field experiences are drawn from the University of Granada, Government agencies, local NGOs, and field experts of Spain and Morocco

Students will attend a migration seminar, participate in several experiential learning activities and they will also have the opportunity to design and carry out an individual field based project to have an impact on the field. The language course will enable students to gain skills that allow them to become functional in the community and their academic work in Spain.

We know from experience that traveling can be an incredible vehicle for education. When we find ourselves away from our comfort zone, rethinking our cultural habits, prejudices and personal beliefs becomes a much simpler task. However, we understand that security is very important, that is why we work in very safe environments and keep our health and safety protocols updated and ready.

Course Objectives

To introduce students to the region of Andalucía in Spain, and its collective memory: Implications for migration.

To familiarize students with the rapid shift in Spain from Emigration to Immigration; the social impact and Spain’s current role as southern gateway to control inmigration into the European Union.

To provide an overview of Spanish modern politics with a focus on political parties’ views and actual role on “Immigration Issues”, such as legal status, access to essential services, housing, health, education, etc.

To confront students with issues of integration, inclusion and exclusion of  immigrants, as well as the reality of their lives around the border.

To analyze the dynamics of migration from North Africa to Spain from different perspectives: humanitarian, regulatory and implication of civil society.

Spanish language and culture

spanish language and culture

The Spanish Language and Culture Course focuses primarily on improving communicative ability and all round language competency. By exploring current events related to the topic at hand the student will also develop academic tools for their individual field based research.

Immersion and interaction with the community is key for language and intercultural learning. That is why our classes will take place both inside and outside of the classroom.

Migration Seminar

Academic interest on the topic of migration has led to an important number of studies and investigations on this subject in Spain.

This seminar will help students gain an understanding of this complex phenomenon, provide a theoretical background, analyze migration from different perspectives and familiarize them with institutions and individuals working in this field.

During this class we will explore topics such as migrations in history, immigration policies, testimonials from the other side of the border, cultural diversity, etc. We will have the opportunity to speak with relevant individuals and institutions working in this field both in Spain and in Morocco.

Independent Field Based Project

During the program, there will be time to reflect and create a field based practical project for students interested in making an impact on this matter. Our team will guide and help to design these projects while giving students a practical framework on the situation of entrepreneurship in Spain and Morocco.

After the program, Celei’s team will offer counseling and support to help turn these projects into action in the students’ home community.

Academic Field Trip to Marocco

Academic Field Trip to Marocco

The program includes an academic field trip to northern Morocco, where we will discover the reality on the other side of the border. In Morocco students discover the roots of the Andalusian Legacy they have witnessed in Andalusia, particularly in Granada. Students experience Moroccan culture firsthand, which has a strong presence not only in Granada but throughout Spain.

Program Site: Granada

Granada has captivated poets, musicians, and travelers from all over the world with its unique mixture of Arabic and Christian architecture, its light and its contrasts. History has left many interesting marks on the city today. Now 290,000 people, 70,000 of whom are university students, inhabit Granada and add to the special atmosphere which surrounds its cultural life.

We enjoy a terrific location, only 60 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea yet at the very foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where the ski season runs from November to the end of April.

The climate has dramatic contrasts and very little rain, almost never from June to September. So people here enjoy a very active social lifestyle in the bars and in the street.
