#Migration in Spain and Morocco, a case for Social Justice

Program Description

This Study Abroad program is designed to put the spotlight on the ongoing migratory crisis between Africa and Europe, and the reality of hundreds of migrants that try to reach European soil.

Lecturers and field experiences are drawn from the University of Granada, Government agencies, local NGOs, and field experts from Spain and Morocco to help participants understand the point of view of all sides of this crisis.

Students will attend a migration seminar and participate in experiential learning activities to help them expand their horizons about this issue. The language course acts as a connector to piece all together and empower students to be proactive in the communities they interact with.

Course Objectives

To introduce students to the implications of migration in the region of Andalucía in Spain, and its collective memory.

To familiarize students with the rapid shift in Spain from Emigration to Immigration, and the social impact of Spain’s current role as the southern gateway to control immigration into the European Union.

To provide an overview of Spanish international and migration politics with a focus on political parties’ views and actual role on “Immigration Issues”.

To confront students with issues of integration, inclusion, and exclusion of immigrants, as well as the reality of their lives around the border.

Migration Seminar

Academic interest in the topic of migration has led to an important number of studies and investigations on this subject in Spain.

This seminar will help students gain an understanding of this complex phenomenon, provide a theoretical background, analyze migration from different perspectives, and familiarize them with institutions and individuals working in this field.

During these classes, we will explore topics such as migrations in history, immigration policies, testimonials from the other side of the border, cultural diversity, etc. We will have the opportunity to speak with relevant individuals and institutions working in this field both in Spain and in Morocco.

Spanish language and culture

spanish language and culture

The Spanish Language and Culture Course focuses primarily on improving communicative ability and all-round language competency.

Immersion and interaction with the community is key for language and intercultural learning. That is why our classes have a classroom component that complements the experiential learning backbone of the program.

Academic Field Trip to Marocco

Academic Field Trip to Marocco

The program includes an academic field trip to northern Morocco, where we will discover the reality on the other side of the border. In Morocco, students discover the roots of the Andalusian Legacy they have witnessed in Andalucía. They will also experience Moroccan culture first-hand, which has a strong presence not only in Andalucía but throughout Spain.

Program Site: Granada

Granada has captivated poets, musicians, and travelers from all over the world with its unique mixture of Arabic, Jewish, and Christian cultures. History has left many interesting marks on the city today. Now 350.000 people, 70.000 of whom are university students, inhabit Granada and add to the special atmosphere that surrounds its cultural life.

We enjoy a privileged location, only 60 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea yet at the very foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The climate has dramatic contrasts and very little rain, rarely from June to September. So people here enjoy a very active social lifestyle outside their houses through music and art that fill the streets with a unique atmosphere.

Cultural Activities

Celei organizes meaningful cultural activities to explore in depth this fairytale city.

These activities will be a great opportunity to contextualize much of what we cover

during the course and a great vehicle to practice our Spanish.

Trip to Sevilla or Cordoba

Trip to Sevilla or Cordoba

Córdoba and Sevilla are together with Granada, the most beautiful cities in Andalucía. Their incredible artistic heritage and rich cultural history make them the perfect opportunity to contrast the subjects covered in Granada.
